US OPEN :: Th Medvedev’s best performance in the Grand Slams was only in the fourth round, at the Australian Open earlier this year. But the 23-year-old has grown spectacularly in the last two months. He participated in both the Citi Open Finals and the Rogers Cup, before winning the first Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati, and now, qualifying for the first Grand Slam of his career.
In contrast, Dimitrov came to the US Open with a loss of seven in eight matches, including a loss to 405th world rival Kevin King in Atlanta in July. He shocked shocker Federer to first enter the final Grand Slam semi-final of the year.
In the first set of the semi-final yesterday, most of the time the two players stood around the baseline. Dimitrov uses backhand shots to initiate attacks with forehand attacks. Medvedev was very patient, maintaining a slow pace in order to find the opponent’s loophole.
Both players take a long time to establish stability in the game. Medvedev won the game with the first ball, before Dimitrov did the same to equalize 2-2. The average of durable balls in the first set does not exceed seven touches.
Dimitrov had his first set-point at 6-5, but Medvedev did not lose his temper and succeeded. In the first tie-break series, Medvedev had a slight advantage when Dimitrov missed a forehand and took advantage of that opportunity to win the opening set, even though the winner score was only half of the opponent (seven points) and more errors self-destruct (18 errors).
In the second set, Dimitrov won the first ball game to create momentum. But the Bulgarian was unable to keep the excitement for long, losing the next two games, while Medvedev reduced the number of self-defeating errors.
When the game passed two hours, Dimitrov began to hit the net with more frequency. Although he won one more game with the ball and lost only three points in the next two games to equalize 5-5, the error of catching the net in a row made Dimitrov pay the second set loss in the match.
In the deciding set, Medvedev sped up after leading 3-1 by winning a game to catch the ball. The fifth seed misses two chances of a match-point in the eighth game, before taking the serve well in the next game to end the match. Medvedev lost just three serve points and didn’t face a break-point in the final set.
After two hours and 38 minutes, Medvedev scored 22 winners and made 40 self-defeating errors, while this parameter Dimitrov was 39 points and 46 errors, respectively.
The victory helped Daniil Medvedev become the first Russian player to reach the Grand Slam final, since Marat Safin won the 2005 Australian Open.
Medvedev’s 2019 US Open final opponent is Rafael Nadal – who defeated Matteo Berrettini after 3 sets with 7-6, 6-4 and 6-1. As Novak Djokovic and Federer both eliminated, the chance for Nadal to win the US Open 2019 is huge.
Daniil Medvedev faces Rafael Nadal in his first ever Grand Slam final at the ATP 2019 US Open. On the other side of the net Nadal will be in search of his 19th Grand Slam title and is odds on favourite to win his fourth US Open crown.
I am expecting a great battle with both players in form. Ultimately Rafael Nadal should have too much in the tank for Medvedev but there is superb value in the total games and set betting markets.

US Open Best Result: Final (2019)
The incredible form of Daniil Medvedev continued in the US Open semi final has he defeated Grigor Dimitrov 7-6, 6-4, 6-3. Medvedev has now reached the final of his last four hard court tournaments after finishing as runner-up at the Washington and Canadian Open and winning the Cincinnati Masters.
In four of Medvedev’s six matches at the US Open he has been taken to four sets but he has been reasonably comfortable in all of them. His serve has been functioning well but his great ability to defend and stay in points has been his strength.
Against world No.2 Rafael Nadal, Medvedev will have to be at his absolute best. They met in the hard court final of the ATP Canadian Open but the Russian produced one of his poorer performances, losing 6-3, 6-0.
Daniil Medvedev is understandably the underdog and can be backed at 6.00 to claim his maiden Grand Slam title. His form cannot be ignored but neither can his opponents. It’s difficult to see a way past Nadal at the moment but I do think there is value in the match to go over 34 games at 1.97.

ATP 2019 US Open Rafael Nadal Form
World Ranking: 2
Career Titles: 83
2019 Titles: 3
US Open Best Result: Winner (2010, 2013 & 2017)
Rafael Nadal has been at his imperious best during the US Open. He has dropped only one set, against Marin Cilic in the fourth round but came through the semi final against Matteo Berrettini in straight sets 7-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Hard court is not necessarily Nadal’s favourite surface but other than clay he seems to perform best on it. In January he lost out to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final but has a great chance to claim his 19th Grand Slam title this time around.
The Spaniard has only played Daniil Medvedev on one occasion previously, and that was a few weeks ago in the ATP Canadian Open final. It is a match Nadal one comfortably in straight sets.
Medvedev has had an incredible 2019, particularly on hard court. While I think Nadal will be too much for the Russian I reckon it is risky banking on Nadal to win outright at 1.12.
The match will be competitive in my opinion and I think Daniil Medvedev will win at least one set. My tip is for Nadal to win but Medvedev to win a set or two at 2.62. For more value I will place a small layout on Rafael Nadal to win 3-1 at 3.75.
Daniil Medvedev vs Rafael Nadal Head to Head
Daniil Medvedev lost his only previous encounter against Rafael Nadal. The match took place in the final of the ATP 2019 Canadian Open on hard court. It was comfortable for the Spaniard who won 6-3, 6-0.
